ABOUT

Studio

Serious topics, genuinely fun games. That single idea is the reason we make games at all.

OUR PHILOSOPHY

Serious topics,
genuinely fun games.

There is a whole field known as serious games — titles built for education, psychology, social issues or vocational training rather than for entertainment. They offer real, valuable learning, but they often run into the same dilemma: when the purpose leads, the pull of the game itself gets weaker. Plenty of them are played once in a training room or a classroom and rarely opened again at home. Excellent as teaching material — yet never quite designed to make anyone want to play another round.

Board games made purely as entertainment tend to have the opposite problem. They are wonderful fun, but deep thinking and real conversation are not something they set out to design.

Aqoocan Games stands between the two.

What we care about is translating the essence of a serious theme into the pleasure of play. Rather than putting the learning up front, we design so that while players are genuinely enjoying themselves, their thinking and their conversation quietly grow.

Logical reasoning, testing a hypothesis, an intuition for probability, self-awareness, understanding other people, cooperation and negotiation. Listed as “learning objectives” they sound stiff. Inside a good game, they simply happen. Our job is to design for that on purpose, instead of leaving it to chance.

Real fun — and real thinking.
Seriously playable — and something stays with you.

This is the place Aqoocan Games is aiming for: distinct from other board game publishers, and distinct from serious games as they exist today.

HISTORY

How we got here

  1. Nyaice! Code released

We published Nyaice! Code, a programming board game played with dice. It was the first time our belief — that a serious theme can be translated into a genuinely fun game — took the shape of a box on a table.

  2. Our first overseas partners

Nyaice! Code reached players abroad through Siam Board Games in Thailand and Yaofish / Gameland in China. Because the components barely depend on language, the game travels easily.

  3. Exhibiting at Game Market

We exhibited as Aqoocan Games at Game Market, Japan’s largest tabletop game fair. Meeting players face to face — and hearing what they actually think — matters to us.

  4. New titles in development

We are working on When the Dragon Withers, built around cooperation and communication, and Inner Deck (working title), built around understanding yourself and the people around you. New themes, waiting to be translated.

GLOBAL PARTNERS

Opening up to the world

Only three parts of the box depend on language, so localization stays light. That is how Nyaice! Code has been able to travel, one publisher at a time.
